June 4, 2012 by david

Our Windiest Wedding Yet

Four Strings provided a string quartet for the wedding of Courtney Tonn and Bruce Lagrone II on Saturday 19 May 2012 at the Tonn residence in Aubrey, TX. A strong and unrelenting wind made this sunset wedding a challenge, but once the music stands were braced and our Musicmaide Sheet Music Portfolios were in place, we were able to complete the gig with no wind-induced catastrophes.

Music for the ceremony was from the traditional set, with Canon in D (Pachelbel) serving as the bridal processional.

Prelude
Suite from The Firste Booke of Songes (Dowland)
Fairest Isle from King Arthur (Purcell)
Trumpet Tune from King Arthur (Purcell)

Ceremony

Ceremony music was drawn from the traditional set with one notable exception. This was the first ceremony to feature The Grand Dance from King Arthur (H. Purcell), a beautiful baroque chaconne recently arranged for the quartet by cellist David Cason.

Prelude

Rhosymedre (Vaughan-Williams)
Suite 2 in D ‘Water Music’ (Handel)
Sinfonia (Arioso) from Cantata ‘Ich steh mit einem Fuss im Grabe’ (Bach)

the perfect day for an outdoor wedding

Four Strings provided a string quartet for the wedding of Aleia Nixon and Joe Gilbert, held outdoors on Saturday 21 April 2012 at the Dean Gilbert residence in Sherman, TX. Unlikely as it may seem for Texas, the weather was fully cooperative, with beautiful sun, comfortable temperatures, and no winds. 20 April 2012 | Marshall — Marticorena Wedding | Ashton Gardens

April 23, 2012 by david

‘jesu’ for the bride

Four Strings provided a string quartet for the wedding of Angela Marshall and Javier Marticorena, held on Friday 20 April 2012, at Ashton Gardens in Corinth TX. As usual, the fine acoustics from the loft at Ashton made it a joy to perform.

Music for the ceremony was a variation on the traditional, but with a twist — rather than the well-known Wagner and Mendelssohn processional/recessional, we were asked to play Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring for the bride, in the Adagio tempo commonly heard on old, pre-baroque revival recordings. For the recessional, the Hallelujah Chorus (cheeky, that).

Prelude
Bist du bei mir (Stölzel)
The Grand Dance (Purcell)
Music from the Royal Fireworks (mvmts. 2-5) (Handel)
The Prayer (Sager/Foster)
Wachet auf, ruft uns die Stimme (Bach)
Ave Verum (Saint-Saëns)
Air from Suite 1 in F (Handel)

Ceremony
Seating of Mothers: Air from Orchestral Suite 3 (Bach)
Bridal Party Processional: Canon in D (Pachelbel)
Bridal Processional: Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring (Bach)
Recessional: Hallelujah Chorus from The Messiah (Handel)
Postlude: Alla hornpipe from ‘Water Music’ Suite 2 in G (Handel)

Four Strings String Quartet
Violin 1: Clare Cason
Violin 2: Corinia Maxson
Viola: Damia Cleaver
